Yulia Mariana: A Captivating Light Installation

An Endless Dynamic Loop of Art and Technology

Yulia Mariana, a mesmerizing light installation created by Naai-Jung Shih, brings the art of figure skating to life through a captivating display of lights and design. Inspired by the elegance and grace of a virtual figure skater named Yulia Mariana, this installation showcases the beauty of movement and the endless possibilities of design.

The concept for Yulia Mariana was born from the idea of the Mobius ring, a symbol of infinity and continuous motion. The endless loop of the ring perfectly captures the dynamic jumps and graceful gestures of figure skating. The installation features linear openings with sharp edges, resembling ice skates, while three transparent strips intertwine to represent the tracks of hand gestures and skate paths.

One of the unique properties of Yulia Mariana is its ability to be displayed both during the day and at night. When illuminated from below, the installation comes alive, casting a mesmerizing glow that accentuates the jumps and movements of a figure skater. Even in daylight, Yulia Mariana stands as a striking piece of art, showcasing the intricate design and craftsmanship.

The realization of Yulia Mariana involved a combination of 3D printing and meticulous design. The main body of the installation, a 3D printed Mobius ring, integrates linear elements that represent the tracks of skates, hands, and body. The connector, symbolizing the skate path, seamlessly connects the different components. The base, designed with precision, perfectly fits the connector and provides support for the floating image.

With dimensions of 33cm(W) x 60cm(H) x 23cm(D), Yulia Mariana is a compact yet impactful installation that commands attention. Its size allows for easy placement in various settings, whether it be a gallery, a living space, or a public area.

Interacting with Yulia Mariana is an immersive experience. The installation invites viewers to explore its intricate details and follow the line of sight to discover the beginning and end points. The USB-powered rechargeable base light can be controlled with a simple switch, offering two levels of intensity to create the desired ambiance.

The creation of Yulia Mariana was a labor of love that started in Taipei in 2017. Extensive research was conducted to ensure a smooth and dynamic visual order, as well as to explore the parametric shape of the installation. Overcoming challenges such as integrating the skate edge and hand gestures with the base, the design team utilized tension, elasticity, transparency, and opacity to bring the performance of a skater to life.

Yulia Mariana has garnered recognition for its innovative design and artistic expression. In 2018, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category. This prestigious award celebrates designs that showcase creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

Yulia Mariana, with its captivating blend of art and technology, invites viewers to dance with the light and experience the beauty of figure skating in a whole new way. Naai-Jung Shih's creation is a testament to the power of design to evoke emotions and create immersive experiences.
